How to Keep Score in Water Polo

Water polo uses a running goal total through four periods. Each legal goal counts once, including goals from penalty throws and power-play situations.

The basics

How water polo scoring works

  1. 01

Add one when the whole ball crosses the goal line under the crossbar.

  2. 02

Carry the cumulative score through all four periods.

  3. 03

At regulation end, the higher score wins or the match remains a draw if the competition allows.

  4. 04

If a shootout is required, follow the event rule for recording the official final result.

Formats and variants
